Pen Pal Lesson Plan

Materials

  • Templates
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Markers, Crayons, Colored Pencils
  • Envelopes
Instructions
  1. Download the free templates and print.
  2. Engage in a conversation with the students about pen pals and letter writing. Ask if they know what a pen pal is, if they have ever written a letter before, etc.
  3. Provide them with an example of a letter. Show the envelop and how it is addressed. Show the letter and how it is written.
  4. Allow the students to brainstorm questions they may have for someone they have never met before.
  5. Depending on the age, provide the appropriate free templates and allow the children write their letter. For younger students, encourage them to draw a picture and have an adult help write a caption.
  6. Allow the students to fold their letter and seal it in an envelope.
  7. Address the envelope.
  8. You can choose to design your own stamp and add it to the envelop if you do not plan to actually mail the letter.   9. Allow the students to decorate their envelopes. If you are sending the letter through USPS, make sure the decorations do not get in the way of the addresses and stamps or your letter may not be mailed.
  10. Wait patiently for a letter to return to you from your new pen pal!
